Air con blowing warm? That is normal ageing, not necessarily a fault. Systems lose up to 10% of their refrigerant a year through microscopic seepage, so most cars need a regas every couple of years. We service both refrigerant types: R134a (most cars up to around 2016) for £72, and R1234yf (most newer cars) for £108. The newer gas really is dearer everywhere, so anyone quoting one cheap price for all cars is not telling you the whole story.

More than a top up

  • Full evacuate, vacuum test and regas to the exact weight your system specifies, not a quick top up.
  • The vacuum stage reveals significant leaks before we fill. If your system will not hold gas, we tell you, rather than filling a leaking system and waving you off.
  • Antibacterial clean included. It kills the mould in the evaporator that causes that damp smell. Some places charge this as an extra. We do not.
  • Leak detection and diagnosis. If a component has failed, we find it and quote the fix in writing.

Air con is not just cooling. It dries the air, which is why it demists a windscreen in seconds. Running it year round also keeps the seals lubricated, so it is still working when summer arrives.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I regas my air con?

Roughly every two years. If it is losing effectiveness sooner, there is likely a leak worth finding first.

Why does my air con smell?

Bacteria and mould on the evaporator behind the dash. An antibacterial clean sorts it, and running the system regularly helps stop it coming back.

Which gas does my car use?

Broadly, cars registered before around 2016 use R134a, and newer cars usually use R1234yf. We check your car’s spec rather than guessing. The wrong gas is not a shortcut we will take.

Will a regas fix my air con?

If it is simply low from natural seepage, yes. If a component has failed or there is a leak, a regas alone is a temporary and wasteful fix. Our vacuum test tells us which situation you are in before you commit.

Excellent service, I had been having problems with my car radio screen for nearly a year, I took it to them and they found the problem straight away and fixed it for me and claimed it on my warranty and I didn’t have to do anything. Also had a service and 2 tyres.They were so helpful, I was very pleased. It feels like I’ve got a new car!

I recently used GT Automotive for a repair through a warranty claim. Matt was very helpful and explained the process. Unfortunately there were some delays for the repair to be done through no fault of the garage but through the warranty company. Matt kept me updated and fought my case for the claim, eventually got the repairs approved and got my car fixed as quick as they could. I've had a hard time in the past finding a garage I can trust, but these are very genuine and I will be using them for all my car needs going forward, and already have my next Service and MOT booked in.
