What the noise usually means

  • High-pitched squeal: usually the pad wear indicator. Pads are low, but the discs can often be saved if you catch it now.
  • Grinding: metal on metal. The pads are gone and every stop is damaging the discs. Don’t keep driving on it.
  • Pulsing through the pedal: usually warped or worn discs.
  • Soft or sinking pedal: could be a fluid leak or air in the system. Get it looked at urgently.
  • Weak handbrake, or pulling to one side: often a sticking caliper or rear brake wear.

Honest quotes, quality parts

Everyone’s heard “you need discs all round, mate”. We measure and photograph what we find and quote in writing. If your discs are within spec we’ll say so, because pads on their own are a cheaper job and we’re happy to do them. Parts are genuine OEM or quality branded, with a 12-month manufacturer warranty (varies a bit by part and supplier).

How fast?

Our parts suppliers are local, so for most cars we can get brake parts the same day. That means most pad and disc jobs are done within the day of the booking. We’ll confirm when you ring.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to drive with grinding brakes?

No. Grinding means the friction material has gone and metal is wearing on metal. Your stopping distance gets worse and the repair gets dearer with every mile. Give us a ring. If it sounds bad we’ll tell you not to drive it and help you get it here.

Do pads and discs always need replacing together?

No. Discs have a minimum thickness, and if yours are within spec and not scored, new pads on their own are fine. We measure rather than assume.

How long do brake pads last?

Anywhere from 20,000 to 60,000 miles depending on how and where you drive. Hills and stop-start town driving wear them faster, and Sheffield has plenty of both. That’s what the free check is for.

How much are new brake pads?

It varies by car, so we don’t print a number that turns out wrong for yours. The check is free and the quote is in writing before anything is fitted.

What about brake fluid?

Brake fluid absorbs water over time and should be changed roughly every two years. It’s probably the most skipped job in car maintenance. We test it during the free check.

Excellent service, I had been having problems with my car radio screen for nearly a year, I took it to them and they found the problem straight away and fixed it for me and claimed it on my warranty and I didn’t have to do anything. Also had a service and 2 tyres. They were so helpful, I was very pleased. It feels like I’ve got a new car!

I recently used GT Automotive for a repair through a warranty claim. Matt was very helpful and explained the process. Unfortunately there were some delays for the repair to be done through no fault of the garage but through the warranty company. Matt kept me updated and fought my case for the claim, eventually got the repairs approved and got my car fixed as quick as they could. I've had a hard time in the past finding a garage I can trust, but these are very genuine and I will be using them for all my car needs going forward, and already have my next Service and MOT booked in.
